Recently, digital marketing professionals conducted studies on the general public’s ability to identify AI content compared to legitimate images and human-written content. The results found that the study participants identified over 70% of the AI content. When given a side-by-side comparison, the study participants were able to correctly identify the AI image 71.63% of the time. The public clearly has a better eye for detail than most digital marketers expect when selecting AI images for use in customer ads and on websites. The AI images often lack correct detail in the hands of people, the texture or hair, or when attempting to replicate a larger area of a random pattern, such as spots on an animal, clouds in the sky, or waves in the ocean. The AI random patterns are actually very repetitive as it is unable to mimic the true randomness of nature. Finally, many AI images are too perfect. The computer depicts the image with perfect detail and clarity regardless of the depth of field. A traditional photo is not typically capable of showing all focal items at varying distances from the lens in perfect focus. The results of the photo comparison of pictures with animals or natural landscapes showed the correct selection of the AI image almost 89% of the time.
Content Written By A Person Versus A Computer
In a similar study of 1,000 participants who were asked to select the AI written content, the results showed that over 82% could detect the AI material some or most of the time. Shockingly, those in the study between the ages of 22 and 34 were the most successful at selecting the AI content, with an 88.4% rate. But are also part of the age range most accepting of AI content use. Factors that impact the ability to discern AI content include the length of the written content, the level of specific knowledge in the content, and the formality of the writing.
