Is AI Ready To Be Our Future?

Most people will agree that the potential of computers is relatively unlimited. They offer massive power to calculate and compare data at genuinely beyond superhuman speeds. Knowing this, you might assume that AI would be fully embraced and engrained in every business on the planet as soon as business leaders have access to this modern marvel. That was also the finding in 2023 when a Gartner survey found that nearly 80% of corporate strategists felt AI would be critical to their future success. However, since that report, only 20% of those same leaders stated they are actively using AI. So, what is stopping business leaders and the general public from embracing AI?

What Americans Are Unwilling To Sacrifice

When you think about the American Dream and what it takes to achieve that goal in today’s world, you are likely to hit upon many of the factors that keep our general public from embracing AI. The vast majority of those polled, roughly 80%, believe AI will eliminate many people’s jobs in the coming year. Roughly that same number of people feel that in the wrong hands, AI will lead to increased data breaches and malicious use of personal information. In addition, nearly half of those asked felt that at some point in the future, AI would jeopardize humanity by attacking people in one manner or another.

It could be that too many people have taken to heart the 2001 depiction of AI as defined by HAL 9000, or the Heuristically programmed ALgorithmic Computer. Others draw their fear from the Terminator and computers becoming self-aware. In the end, the simple fact is that while people want to have a device that can complete massive calculations and processes for them, they fear having the work done by something that eliminates the human factor when making choices. Empathy and concern for the well-being of others are still more important and valued than swift computing.

Limited Applications Mean Limited Value

The average person is happy to have a computer or smartphone that will allow them to search for an answer to a question or general information on the fly. Googling how many dogs are in the United States in a fraction of a second is helpful and desirable. However, no one wants to be at the mercy of an emotionless machine to decide how many dogs should be allowed to live in the United States. There could be a simple mathematical solution that would let us all know the ideal number of dogs in the country that could all lead their best lives. But humans want to make that choice by combining what the numbers tell us as facts and what we feel in our hearts to be best for the dogs and the people in the country.

We Fought For Independence Once And Will Not Do It Again

Americans fought for our independence in the 1770s, and no one wants to face another battle for our rights today. Centuries ago, we were fighting not to be controlled and told what to do by the British. But today, the same motivation keeps the majority of Americans from fully embracing AI. As a whole, people, especially Americans, want to remain in control. They are not ready to pass that privilege over to a machine or someone who is programming and teaching a machine that they do not understand and have the ability to control.
